About 10 years ago, I visited Koh Yao Noi for the fist time. I immediately was taken in by the natural beauty of this unspoilt Island - and, most importantly, by its unique views towards the Bileh archipelagos. I decided on the spot to develop something on Koyao to share this yet undiscovered jewel in the Andaman sea with my friends and family. And it was from the very first moment on clear to me that the community on the Island must share in it, too.

After arriving by boat in the main harbour and driving up the street towards the village, the very fist big building on the right which I saw was … a school building! I remember this so well because it made me immediately feel at ease and most reassured: Where people put emphasize on schooling and education, this is where tradition, culture and education is taken seriously, and where these disciplines are taken seriously, this is where you have a solid foundation to build on!

Our first project on the Island - what later became known as the Koyoa Island Resort (www.koyao.com) - was a success, not only because we did a few things right, but also - and maybe more importantly - because we were able to build on this foundation of the Island, with well educated people.

Now, if we are serious about the people of the Island to share with us in the prosperity of our projects, in other words, if we want to give something back to the Island, then probably the best we can do is to further build on this very foundation of tradition, culture and education. And exactly this thought was the origin of the Koyao's Children's Community Centre: We wish and want to help the future generations of this wonderful Island to continue to prosper with their tradition, culture and education!

The future of Koh Yao Nois lies with it's children. We strive to provide them with a safe environment where they can familiarize themselves with the English language and learn about other people and cultures. The language and computer skills they learn at the Children's Center give them a head start in an area of Thailand where tourism is and will remain the predominant industry for the foreseeable future.

Koh Yao Noi is a muslim island. Muslims in Southern Thailand need to feel that they are part of the world community as a whole, and not just pawns in the power politics and the terrorism of islamist extremists. We believe that by offering the children of Koh Yao Noi the opportunities for learning and growing at the Center we make a small contribution towards fostering tolerance and willingness to accept others. We also help them gain the skills to participate in the modern economy of Southern Thailand.
