Education In Thailand
The educational system and the style of teaching in Thailand is quite outdated. The old style presents content to be memorized and reproduced by speaking or writing. This system works well for those students that are able to create tools that help them remember and learn. Most students however do not excel in this environment and therefore lose interest in school. To achieve development through education, learning must be hands-on, concrete, and self-initiated.
The Thai government is aware of the problem and passed a law back in 1996 that English should be taught in all schools starting in Grade One. The reforms have been slow but some progress has been made. The big issue here is that local schools do not have the budget to hire native English speakers. Foreign teachers are expensive to hire so local students have no opportunity to practice English with native speakers.
Students can come to learn English here at CCC with native English speakers for free. We often have volunteers and visitors from aroudn the world giving the kids the chance to practice communication in a variety of accents and languages.
